What’s On Heritage Walks led by Michael Gibbons, one of Ireland’s best known field archaeologists
What’s On is delighted to announce its heritage walks especially designed for readers of What’s On.
A taste of Connemara’s history and archaeology
Having looked at last year’s visitor surveys published by Failte Ireland, we noticed a strong interest in Irish heritage, as in, the historical, cultural and archaeological aspects of a place or a region. Visitors to Connemara want to experience the historical and archaeological aspects of Connemara that they read about in their guide books and online sources prior to visiting. Understanding this, we wanted to come up with a way to help the visitor access Connemara’s rich heritage. As walking is one of the best ways to discover Connemara’s past, we came to the conclusion that we should offer heritage walks around Connemara.
Working with Michael
In order to develop these walks, we sat down with renowned local archaeologist Michael Gibbons and began planning. The fruits of our discussions are What’s On Heritage Walks. They will take place over the course of the summer, commencing the 11th of May. This will be a great attraction and something wonderful to recommend to your guests and patrons. We are truly excited to be working with our good friend Michael, and look forward to seeing some of you out on the walks!
Guided Walks
We are currently organising the details of the walking itineraries. All I can say at this point is that they are going to be a fantastic and entertaining way for visitors to explore the landscape, without the huge backpacks and blisters! We plan on a variety of individual walks. Rain or shine, they will depart from a meeting point weekly. All of the walk route information will be featured fortnightly in What’s On as well as on our purpose-built website, connemarawalks.com. The likely spin-off for business is that it might encourage visitors to stay a little longer, and their shared experiences may even attract other visitors to the region!
Booking for these walks will be available on our website: connemarawalks.com which is currently under construction.
